Abstract
Every year, the popularity of comic books and graphic novels among readers, however, at present, they are
just beginning to receive recognition in the scientific community as an independent art form and an area worthy
of research, within which there is no single research methodology. The purpose of this article is to analyze the
existing theoretical material on the methods and positions of the humanities, through which the comics are studied
as an independent art form. As a result, of the study based on the analysis of scientific sources from international
citation bases, it was concluded that at present the theory of comics is in a rather active, albeit ambiguous, status,
while the methodology for studying comics can be classified into three main directions. It is worth noting that within
the framework of the scientific world, stereotypes about the poorness and insolvency of the comic as a field for theoretical study are gradually overcome, but at the present time there is no single point of view regarding its place
and a single study methodology.
